Onfray writes obscurely that there is no philosophy without psychoanalysis. He prefers to say though that his 'university' is committed to deliver high-level knowledge to the masses, as opposed to the more common approach of vulgarizing philosophic concepts through easy-to-read books such as "Philosophy for Well-being". Both in his writing and his lecturing, Onfray's approach is hierarchical, and elitist. Nor is the content of the Université populaire de Caen radical in French terms, it is in its way, a throwback to less democratic traditions of learning. After all, 'ordinary' French University lectures are open to all, free of charge. However, the title 'Popular University' is misleading, although attractive, as this 'University' provides no services other than the occasional delivery of lectures - there is no register of students, no examination or assessment, and no diplomas. He taught this subject to senior students at a technical high school in Caen between 19, before establishing what he and his supporters call the Université populaire de Caen, proclaiming its foundation on a free-of-charge basis, and the manifesto written by Onfray in 2004 (La communauté philosophique). Born to a family of Norman farmers, he graduated with a Ph.D.

Just how much is up to us, and always will be.Ī century and a half after the greenhouse effect was first identified, and a few decades since climate denial and misinformation began muddying our sense of what scientists do know, we are left with a set of predictions that can appear falsifiable - about global temperatures and sea-level rise and even hurricane frequency and wildfire volume. Which means that no matter how hot it gets, no matter how fully climate change transforms the planet and the way we live on it, it will always be the case that the next decade could contain more warming, and more suffering, or less warming and less suffering. It is not a matter of “yes” or “no,” not a question of “fucked” or “not.” Instead, it is a problem that gets worse over time the longer we produce greenhouse gas, and can be made better if we choose to stop. Whatever you may have read over the past year - as extreme weather brought a global heat wave and unprecedented wildfires burned through 1.6 million California acres and newspaper headlines declared, “Climate Change Is Here” - global warming is not binary. It’s unclear which of these Atwood considers the greater wound. They have no right to read and no right to pleasure. They have no right to work, earn, talk back, walk alone. The Wives, Handmaids and domestic Marthas of Gilead are helpmeets, vessels and servants. Both women, fertile chattel and barren wife, are debased both suffer a peculiar humiliation. “Which of us is it worse for, her or me?” wonders Offred. How India’s ancient myths are being re-written Why the Handmaid’s Tale is so relevant today Nothing else in the book – not the hangings, the scapegoatings, the slut-shamings, the unbabies – had the power of that menacing ménage a trois. If someone had said “The Handmaid’s Tale” at any time in the 18 years since I first read Margaret Atwood’s dystopia, one scene would have come to mind: the Ceremony, the ritualised rape of the Handmaid Offred by the Commander, while Offred rests her head in the lap of his wife. Strange the things that stay with you, what you remember and what you forget. This is unheard of, but because she is the daughter of the Lady Vey, the lamplighters accept her.Īs Rossamünd is the only one who can tolerate Threnody, she quickly latches on to him. The group was on their way to Winstermill because the youngest, a wit named Threnody, wants to become a lamplighter. Shortly after arriving at Winstermill, Rossamünd's brigade of prentice lamplighters is attacked by monsters. What he once thought would be a boring job turns out to be anything but. Rossamünd Bookchild has arrived at his post as a prentice lamplighter. As the story picks up where the first episode left off, with little exposition, it is good to read the two books in order. Lamplighter is just as detailed as Foundling, but much more happens, making the book twice as long. Lamplighter: Monster Blood Tattoo Book Two by D. M. Cornish However, owing to the constant pressure to present a "respectable" public image, suffrage leaders publicly conformed to gendered views of ideal womanhood in order to make women's suffrage more palatable to the public. Rouse reveals that, contrary to popular belief, the suffrage movement included a variety of individuals who represented a range of genders and sexualities. The women's suffrage movement, much like many other civil rights movements, has an important and often unrecognized queer history. Public Faces, Secret Lives restores queer suffragists to their rightful place in the history of the struggle for women's right to vote. Ah yes, we need a special and beautiful woman and right on the heels of the murder Sophie Neveu, expert in code breaking, turns up just as the standard thriller’s police investigative star is interrogating Langdon, at the murder site no less, in the basement of the Louvre. Harvard scholar, Robert Langdon, in Paris to give a lecture on symbolism in religion, becomes a lead suspect in Sauniere’s death. Jacques Sauniere, a curator at the Louvre in Paris is murdered. The basic plot device is clever and rather straight forward for the genre of the thriller. Holy Grail, elevated to a world-historic conspiracy theory. However, Dan Brown has bigger fish to fry and created what I found to be both a gripping yet aggravating thriller and a clever, almost ironic exploration of the myth of the Nikos Kazanzakis’s THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST and the incredible THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JESUS CHRIST by Jose Saramago. Two very fine novels I have read already tackle that theme and do it well. I must say: if that had been the theme I would have been very surprised at the level of discussion the book created. The dominant theme I heard discussed was a sexual relationship or even marriage / love affair between Jesus and Mary Magdalene. With all the buzz, radio talk shows, many reviews, soon a movie to be made, I feel like one of the last American readers to get to this book.īut the contrast between “the buzz” and the book itself has fascinated me. Jake then heads to Texas to prepare for 11/22/63, taking a job at a rural high school outside of Dallas. Jake tests his powers to alter the future by shooting the murderous father of a janitor from his high school, knowing that this will save the family from immediate death and destruction at the hands of this monster. Our reviewer, Alan Cheuse, is glad King took it up.ĪLAN CHEUSE, BYLINE: Steven King has written a time travel novel about a Maine high school English teacher named Jake Epping who travels back to 1958. Kennedy, a what-if science fiction take on a subject that's been tackled over and over again by historians. It's about the assassination of President John F. His newest effort, though, has loftier ambitions. Stephen King could probably turn a book about paint drying into a bestseller. Thus his views on the spiritual gifts, on the ordination of women, and other controversial matters we re not something all Christians could accept. One was a comment by a social media friend after I posted about his passing: “ He seemed to be a mixed bag if wiki is correct.” I did not reply, but I thought to myself, ‘ I f he need s to go to Wiki, he evidently does not know much about this world-renowned NT scholar’. The two of them ended up teaching together at Regent College in Vancouver for some years.Īs I say, while not at first seeking to pen a piece on this, a few things have spurred me on. One good friend of mine who I met there, Rikki Watts, who graduated at the same time as I did, certainly did take many of his classes, and was greatly impacted by him, as were so many others. I am not sure why, but I do not seem to have taken any classes with him while I was there. I did attend a seminary he was at: Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston. Because I have 17 of his important books, I feel I know a bit about him. The New Testament scholar just passed away at age 88. I was not going to pen a piece on this great man’s passing, since a number of good pieces are already appearing on him and his ministry.
