![]() ![]() The American Dream is buttressed by the labor extracted from 'stolen black bodies' (as Ta-Nehisi Coates would say) and the genocide of its original inhabitants. They try to walk, they try to walk - the feet keep reaching long after the neck has broken or the head has choked. Swaying in the light wind, rags of clothing flapping the shrunken limbs into motion. I must always return to what the white men kept hanging in all the lovely cottonwood trees along the rivers and streams throughout this land. ![]() And applaud as a silent witness to the fictional resurrection of a people and civilization so meticulously blotted out, first from existence, then from consciousness and memory. ![]() ![]() But what one can do is reverentially acknowledge the handiwork of this authorial anger, appreciate the blurred edges of a story - an important one - that emerge from the void of a mass amnesia and a carefully preserved collective delusion. There is, perhaps, no way to bestow readerly affection on a work so single-mindedly driven by an intense fury. ![]() ![]() ![]() The villains’ later actions don’t make a whole lot of sense, but if you roll with it, most get what they deserve (although I was disappointed that there wasn’t an epilogue of a will reading showing one particular character getting an unpleasant surprise – I’m being vague to avoid spoilers…) The book is padded out with a lot of not particularly interesting domestic details and conversations about how much they all love each other, making it about 30% longer than it needed to be. It’s obvious from the start who both the love interest and the antagonists will turn out to be. ![]() Ironically, the negative reviews for this complain about the lack of romance and love scenes, but for me this was the main reason I liked it. ![]() This had two likeable and well developed main characters, and a few interesting support characters, like laidback surfer-sheriff Red and flamboyant step-grandmother Lily, but most of the other characters were too saccharine-sweet to be true. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The passage was cobbled, and at the end of it there was an old two-story clapboard house. I recently re-read the first of the Hamish books, Death of a Gossip as part of my quest to read or re-read the first books of some of the most popular and recommended Cozy Mystery series. Beaton continues to write new books and both series are often still recommended by site readers.
